No sleepy

I have an exam tomorrow, and for all the wrong reasons, I've decided to update you all on my life that has assuredly not changed since last you read. Well, maybe a few things have changed. For example, Lola the dog will be coming home to us here at 808 Carlos Aguirre Luco in a few days....what else....I painted my nails? In reality, I'm terrified for this exam. Thinking about it just makes a knot in my stomach.

I haven't left the house much in the past few days, and perhaps that too has something to do with it. I've decided that I have an incurable case of ADD and therefore have found it perfectly acceptable to check all the gossip websites and email accounts that occur to me. Truth is, I'm not that popular, and very little happens in the celebrity world while everyone else is at work. And so, I've settled on blogging.

Actually, we had quite the chaotic day yesterday- the abuela fell down while trying to maneuver herself from a chair to her bed, and while falling, hit her amputated leg on the ground. She started bleeding and as she's currently taking anticoagulants, you can imagine it was a lot of blood. And it didn't stop. I was home alone with her and helped as best I could, then we had to sit tight and wait for CarGlo to show up with extra gauze. The grandma was in a lot of pain as she had hit her leg very hard, and it was beginning to swell. When CarGlo showed up, we decided it would be for the best to call the paramedics just to check and make sure everything was ok. They took her to the hospital and she came home with this sad little plaster cast on her little abbreviated leg. She had fractured her fibula. It looked pretty heavy and uncomfortable-it goes all the way up to the hip.

Today, she seems to be doing much better, outside of muscle cramps. And I think that the arrival of the puppy will come not a minute too soon. Of course we do have a kitten in the house as well...the family got him the day after Susie died (draw your own conclusions).

I can't help but feel like I attract disaster. Let's hope this exam isn't one of them.

Se llama Lola

Well, it's been a terribly busy week, and there's lots to tell. First of all, I met a little dog named Lola at the veterinarian clinic and fell in love with her. She is the sweetest little puppy. She had been hit by a car and brought in by the driver who hit her with the hopes that her owner would look for her. But the truth of the matter is, she didn't have a collar, and is only 2 months old, and most likely never had an owner to begin with. We saw her while we were in the clinic with the cat, and after hearing that she had a broken jaw and dislocated hip, and no real hope for recovery without surgery, my host-father decided to go ahead and pay for it, as long as it meant she wouldn't be euthanized. As I said before, I couldn't help myself, and just had to have her. And so, I'll be bringing the little girl home with me in December. But first, we have to get her vaccinated. And that's today's task. Wish me luck.

UPDATE:

Unfortunately the little (morbidly obese) Susie passed away last night. CarGlo (my host mother) and I went to the veterinarian's office to say goodbye to her very early this morning, as she died during surgery. This afternoon she will have to tell the children when she picks them up from school. It's such a shame, but CarGlo is a wonderful mother and plans on taking the kids directly to the veterinary clinic so that the doctor can explain exactly what happened to Susie and so they can say goodbye.

In other news, I am getting a puppy. When we first arrived at the animal hospital, there was a 2 month old Labrador puppy who had been brought in after being hit by a car. She has a broken jaw and a dislocated hip. My very generous and sensitive host parents have decided to cover the costs of her surgery, as she has no owner. However, she does need a home. This is where I come in. She may or may not be able to travel with me from Santiago on December 16, but perhaps a few weeks later. I am really excited for her, and a little nervous because she is having her surgeries this afternoon, but I am very hopeful that all will go well.

Once again I must apologize for having lacked in my duties as faithful blog-pal. But I've had a lot to do, people. It's hot as a tandoor oven here, and I can't help but be cranky. Actually, I think I would be a fatty riblet on on a grill with God smiling down over his big apron. I can see it now, "Turn onto your side now, Sally.", he'd say in his booming voice, "you're getting overdone and you know how I don't like my meat dry and tough." Actually let's just take some initiative and stop imagining that.

As I live in the attic, there is no sleeping between the hours of about 8 am and 11 pm. So when do I nap?! Exactly. My host family just got a lovely faux leather couch in the main floor. I have been passing out there with great regularity. In fact, I was sleeping there the other day when I was awakened by the Nana shouting for me to get the dog out. I had no idea what was going on, so I opened the front door to see a doberman and some little sidekick dog trot past. I shut the gate, walk back into the kitchen to some awful smell. Like death warmed over. Apparently, it was because the cat was laying on the floor, growling and hissing and bleeding all over the place.

Let's have a timeout, shall we? Please allow me to mention here that Susie the cat is the fattest feline I have ever set eyes on --ever (this coming from someone whose grandmother has had an unhealthy obsession with cats for years. I wouldn't be surprised if she knit me something with a cat on it for Christmas. It's been known to happen). Susie is so fat, she can't bathe herself. There's just too much of her; she more or less gives up once she's covered both the paws and face. Screw the rest of the body, she's tired. When she lays on all fours, her girth covers all of her legs, with room to spare. It's actually a fantastic hiding place. Sometimes I stick candy under there because I know she won't be moving for the next 7-9 hours, so I'm good 'til I get my next jones. Susie is also about 13 years old, which means it's totally OK if she has 'accidents' inside the house (they should be called disasters). In fact, it seems to make her family love her more. It makes me want to skip lunch.

Anyhow, the Nana and I wrapped her up in a rug and my host dad drove us to the vet. The cat had apparently been the subject of a tug-o'-war between these two neighborhood dogs, their grips being her lower stomach and right rear leg. In any event she's now shipshape and ready to get back on the prowl. I think she'll be released from the vet's in the next few days.

As for me, I have plenty of final projects and papers to write, so I'm sure I'll blogging more than ever in the next few weeks. I only have about 4 left, so I'll do my best to make up for lost time, amigos.
